Most of us have experienced the value of sharing a cuppa, chat and a biscuit to unwind, debrief or just to catch up. Now this time-honoured practice and pleasure has been highlighted in a fascinating new project. Find out how it’s bringing women out from beyond their favourite treat.
Whether your cookie of choice is an Iced VoVo or a cheeky macaron, biscuits have their place in bringing people together. The Biscuit Tin Project was first launched at the 2018 Embolden Festival and was relaunched last year by the Older Women’s Network NSW as part of its #OlderWomenCount campaign to continue sharing the message that ageism and sexism against older women in the community is real, and not OK.
The driving force behind the Biscuit Tin project is Celebrate Ageing’s Dr Catherine Barrett, a valued colleague and friend to Advocare, who inspires and supports our efforts to raise awareness of older people’s rights and value through her campaign initiatives like #ReadyToListen to address elder abuse.
The Biscuit Tin Project aims to highlight the contribution and wisdom of older women through shared recipes and stories, using the biscuit tin as a cross-cultural symbol of nurturing and caring. The project, which includes the ‘Recipes for Respect’ initiative, aims to provide a voice, agency, and recognition for older women, especially those from migrant and refugee backgrounds, who often feel invisible and undervalued.

The vision for the future is to see the Biscuit Tin Project roll out across Australia. Advocare is taking part in the project with support from the Lancelin Community Resource Centre (CRC) during October. We’re excited to host this session and hope to encourage more local government councils and clubs to organise their own. Biscuit Tin Project Lancelin flyer.
If you love the sound of it and would like to give the project its time in the sun in your community or club, Biscuit Tin Project facilitator tins (starter kits) can be ordered through the Older Women’s Network (OWN NSW) here.
So, grab a cuppa yourself and visit the project page link here to immerse yourself in a few of the stories that have already willingly been shared from others’ biscuit tins around the country.
