There are many ways you can make a difference – from providing companionship through our volunteer visitors program, offering your admin skills to support our work, joining us as a student on placement, or sharing your expertise with our committees and reference groups. If any of these opportunities interest you, we’d love for you to join our dedicated volunteer team!
Aged Care Volunteers Visitors Scheme (ACVVS)
ACVVS is a community program that aims to make a difference in the lives of older adults who may feel lonely or isolated due to social, mobility, or cultural challenges. This free service offers friendship and companionship to seniors from diverse backgrounds. Volunteers are matched with older adults based on shared interests, helping to foster meaningful connections and improve the quality of life for seniors at home or in aged care homes.

How do I become a volunteer visitor?
If you’re 18 or older, you can register as a volunteer. You’ll need a National Criminal History Record Check (we can assist if needed), proof of the latest flu and COVID vaccinations, and two references (not family). Our online registration is simple, and our friendly coordinators are happy to help if you need support.
Is training required?
Yes! You’ll complete online training as part of your induction before meeting with a client.
How often do I need to visit and for how long?
Volunteers are asked to visit at least once per fortnight, visits normally go between 1 -2 hours
Visitors can visit weekly depending on availability.
What if we have nothing in common?
Friendships take time, especially if your client hasn’t had regular visitors. Be patient and allow time for them to feel comfortable. If you’re not connecting after a few visits, let your coordinator know, and we’ll help match you with another client.
Are there activities I can’t do?
Yes. There are some activities that are not permitted such as driving, personal care, handling finances, household chores and administering medication. We ask volunteers to focus on companionship and safe activities such as chatting, reading, sharing hobbies or enjoying entertainment together.
What happens when I go on holiday?
No worries! Just inform us in advance, and we’ll arrange a temporary visitor to keep your client supported.
Can we go out for coffee and cake and if so, do I have to pay?
Yes. Outings for coffee are encouraged. Costs can be shared or discussed with our Volunteer Coordinator.
