Marking 10 years of support for WA Elder Abuse Helpline

In September 2024, Advocare marked the 10th anniversary of the WA Elder Abuse Helpline, a vital resource for older people at risk of, or experiencing, elder abuse in Western Australia. Advocare has proudly managed this crucial information and support service for the last decade.

Launched in 2014, the helpline offers free, confidential information and specialised advocacy to people who are at risk of, concerned about or experiencing elder abuse. It also acts as a referral hub, helping callers connect with services like Elder Rights WA, the Older People’s Rights Service, or government agencies like the Office of the Public Advocate. For many, it’s the first place they turn to for guidance and support.

The Elder Abuse Helpline’s demand has grown significantly with more than 7,300 calls logged since switching on the service. Our hope is this increase reflects the growing recognition of elder abuse and the importance of having a safe place to seek help.

The State Government has played an essential role in ensuring this service continues, contributing over $1.15 million through the Department of Communities. As we mark this milestone, it’s a reminder of how vital the WA Elder Abuse Helpline is in protecting the rights and dignity of Western Australia’s seniors. Here’s to 10 years of making a real difference!

The free and confidential WA Elder Abuse Helpline (1300 724 679) operates Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4.30pm.
