Volunteering: Creating brighter lives for older people

Volunteering brightens an older person’s day, but it also brings plenty of benefits for our volunteer visitors too. Meet Dale, who joined the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme mid-last year.

Dale joined Advocare as a volunteer in our Aged Care Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) in July of 2024. She was encouraged to volunteer by her daughter, who works at Advocare and sees firsthand the difference it makes to the lives of lonely older people. Starting with just one client, in the past few months Dale has happily added extra clients to her visiting list, creating brighter moments for even more people.

“Being able to help my first client gave me such a sense of satisfaction. I was able to do simple tasks for her, that she is struggling to do, that we all take for granted.” Dale has also met other volunteers through volunteering and heard about their journeys.

“Volunteering gets me out and about and challenges me to move out of my comfort zone. It broadens my horizons, just by talking and having a laugh over coffee. I get to find out about other people’s lives, and I always feel good after a visit.”

If you’re thinking about volunteering but still aren’t sure, Dale is full of encouragement! “I get such a sense of fulfilment from doing something as simple as spending time with someone. Putting a smile on somebody else’s face also puts a smile on mine.”
