Have you heard Have a Go News, one of WA’s iconic independent family-owned publications, is celebrating a wonderful milestone? The paper has just notched up 35 years in business – and in championing older Western Australians. Read about their history and what lies ahead.
The story began in 1991, when Judith Treby and Quentin Smythe launched the paper with a clear purpose: to support, motivate and inspire older readers. The first edition reached the community through 5,000 copies shared among clubs, libraries, businesses, government agencies and local groups.
Over time, and now 415 issues, Have a Go News has evolved along with its loyal readership into a free, independent, family-owned monthly newspaper that remains true to its community roots of giving older people a voice and presence in community life.
Led today by editor-in-chief Jen Merigan, Have a Go News has kept moving with the times while staying as relevant as ever. Its pages have covered everything from health, travel and hobbies to food, sport, entertainment, discounts and competitions, as well as supporting the major annual ‘Have a Go Day’ events in Perth and Rockingham.
Jen Merigan reflects, “As a family-owned publication we are proud of what Have a Go News does for mature Western Australians. We help people stay informed, active and connected, and we give them a voice. Everyone deserves to feel valued, respected and supported.
“As Western Australia’s mature population grows over the next 20 years, our work will matter even more. It’s imperative to champion healthy ageing and our goal is to reach 100,000 printed copies each month, alongside our online coverage. That means more people can access trusted information in the way that suits them, without being forced online.”
Advocare congratulates Jen Merigan and the entire Have a Go team over time for their valuing of and investment in older West Australians. Your commitment matters. But wait – there’s more…
