Student volunteers with the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) bring energy, cultural diversity, and friendship to older people. It’s a win-win that strengthens connections across generations and communities that money can’t buy!
The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) is all about brightening the lives of older people through regular companionship, and one group making a wonderful impact are student volunteers.
Students over the age of 18 who choose to give their time bring fresh energy, curiosity, and a genuine eagerness to connect. For those studying in the human services field, volunteering is more than an opportunity to help; it’s also a chance to gain practical experience, build confidence, and grow personally and professionally.
Currently, 28 students are enrolled with ACVVS, and their contribution is being felt in many ways. Whether it’s a friendly chat, a shared hobby, or just being there to listen, there is no doubt, these visits make a real difference to the lives of older people.
Learning through experience
The benefits for students go far beyond study credits or adding experience to a CV. Volunteering offers invaluable firsthand experience in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Students studying nursing, psychology, speech pathology, counselling, and aged care or community services gain insights that can’t be learned in a classroom alone. Many of our student volunteers report feeling a stronger sense of purpose and fulfilment, knowing they are making a meaningful contribution to their community.
Student volunteers also bring cultural richness to the program. Many come from multicultural backgrounds and can communicate in a wide range of languages, including Mandarin, Arabic, Punjabi, Portuguese, Thai, and more. This ability helps bridge cultural and language gaps, creating stronger, more inclusive connections with clients who may otherwise feel isolated.
Practical benefits money can’t buy
The recent Psychology Society Fair at Murdoch University showed just how powerful student engagement can be with an impressive number of students signing up to volunteer after learning about the positive impact of the ACVVS program. Of course, these connections don’t just benefit students, older people also appreciate the unique perspective and energy students bring. Intergenerational friendships grow, stories are shared, and communities stand to become stronger.
So, for students, volunteering with ACVVS can:
- Provide practical, hands-on experience.
- Boost confidence and self-esteem.
- Enhance resumes with real-world skills and experiences.
- Offer a sense of fulfillment and happiness from helping others.
- Create opportunities to explore future career pathways.
Our ACVVS volunteering team is proud to welcome students and deeply values the fresh perspectives they bring. Together, they’re creating positive change – one visit at a time.
