Winter hydration winners

When the weather cools, it’s easy to think of dehydration as a summer issue. However, hydration remains just as important during winter, particularly for older people.

In cooler weather, people often feel less thirsty and may drink less fluid throughout the day without realising it. For older people, this can be compounded by some medications and health conditions that may increase the risk of dehydration. Add to that, our desire to crank up the heating at home or at work, which can lead to fluid loss, and winter dehydration

Maintaining good hydration overall supports overall health and wellbeing and the good news is that small, simple habits make it easier to stay on track throughout winter

Tips to stay hydrated:

  • Start the day with a glass of water.
  • Have a drink with every meal and snack.
  • Choose warm options like herbal tea, warm water with lemon, broth, or soup.
  • Keep a cup or drink bottle within reach.
  • Set reminders on your phone, a clock or calendar.
  • Ask a GP or pharmacist if medications may affect hydration needs.
  • During a toilet stop check your urine colour. Generally, pale yellow is usually a good sign you’re hydrated.

All these tips will send you in the right direction to stay better hydrated this winter. Small changes can make all the difference.
